The project was an extension to and remodelling of an existing 1950’s house, with sustainability as a key client requirement. The existing building was an uninsulated flat roofed block, cold and tired, but structurally sound. The later additions were removed to leave the original square building, the cellular nature of which was used for the three bedrooms, bathroom and shower room. A new prefabricated solid timber structure was then built on the North side of this, housing the kitchen, dining and sitting rooms in one open-plan space. A new basement structure, was cut into the hillside, but left away from the main house, to avoid underpinning, upon which the cantilevered timber structure sat, projecting out into the view on the North side with a bespoke frameless glass ‘bay’ window filling this facade to take in the spectacular coastal view.
